JEE Advanced 2016 to be conducted on May 22, no changes in boards marks weightage.

Putting an end to the confusion of students amid the speculation of major changes, IIT to continue with their existing pattern of the two-tier selection process. IIT JEE Advanced is going to be held on May 22, 2016.  However, this time the 2 lakh students will be able to sit for the exam as against 1.5 lakh for the upcoming year. IIT Guwahati will be conducting the JEE Advanced 2016.

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has decided to continue with the existing pattern of boards marks as well. Like every year, 40 per cent weight will be given to board marks and 60 per cent to the JEE-Main score. The eligibility criteria will also remain same for the students, although, those students who have already accepted any of the seats in any of the IITs or ISM in 2015 will not be allowed for the JEE Advanced in 2016. Major changes suggested in JEE by IIT Council. 2 Lakh students will be allowed to appear in JEE Advanced.

The Committee of Eminent Persons (CEP) constituted by the IIT Council has made a series recommendations which will change the structure of JEE to a greater extent. These changes in the structure of JEE shall be effected from 2017 onward.

Under the chairmanship of Ashok Misra, the CEP has recommended that a National Testing Service shall be set up by early 2016, mandated to conduct an aptitude test, which should test the scientific aptitude and innovative thinking ability of the candidates.

The aptitude test may be conducted two or more times a year and shall be an online test. The test shall be modeled such to make students apply scientific thinking. Based on this performance, about 4 lakh candidates shall be short-listed for taking the JEE.

The JEE itself will be on the lines of the current JEE (Advanced) and designed to test the knowledge in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; and shall be conducted by the IITs. From this, ranks shall be issued to over 40,000 students who can seek admission in IITs and NITs based on a common counselling. The IITs have been recommended to set up a system for developing mock JEE examinations which may help students prepare for the exam. The possibility of using the MOOCS platform can also be explored.

The HRD ministry too has been suggested by CEP to take measures for the improvement of school education and the method of examination of the various Boards, so that students with the Science aptitude are well prepared in the concepts by the time they reach 12th grade.

According to CEP, till such time, that is for 2016 and 2017, the practice of two tier JEE examination shall be continued. The top 200,000 students from JEE (Main) shall be allowed to appear in JEE (Advanced). More than 40,000 ranks will be issued in JEE (Advanced) for developing a better system for selection of candidates. Joint counselling for IITs and NITs shall be continued as was done last year. Board marks shall not to be counted for giving rankings this year for NITs, CFTIs etc.

The Government has decided to place the recommendations in the public domain for widespread consultation with the stakeholders.
