JEE Main in full CBT mode this time

Hyderabad: The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2019 which is being conducted from January 8 to 12 has many firsts to its credit.

For the first time, the entrance examination is being conducted by a newly constituted National Testing Agency (NTA) beside it being held fully through Computer Based Test (CBT) mode.

Earlier, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) organised the examination in the pen and paper based mode and CBT as well. From now on it will be held in CBT mode only except for Part-III drawing test which will be pen and paper based.

There is another first, the exam will be conducted twice i.e. in January as well as from April 6 to 20, 2019. Students who fail to get their best in the first attempt can go for second attempt in April. The final merit list or ranking is done by taking student’s best score of the two examinations into consideration.

For smooth conduct of the entrance test, the NTA will use highend surveillance systems including CCTVs and for the first time, jammers will be in place at the examination centres.

“No candidate should adopt any unfair means or indulge in any unfair examination practices as the centres are under surveillance of CCTV and equipped with jammers,” the NTA said.

About 9.65 lakh students registered for the first attempt examination. The NTA has already uploaded the admit cards on its website and the same can be downloaded by the applicants. The organising body has advised the students to visit the test venue a day before examination so as to familiarise with the location.

The first shift examination will be conducted from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm and second shift from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm. The applicants have been advised to reach the centre one hour before commencement of the test and carry admit card along with one passport size photograph as uploaded during online submission of application. The students also need to carry an original photo identify proof such as PAN card, driving license, voter ID, passport, Aadhaar card or ration card.

The candidates are prohibited from carrying any other material including hand bag, pencil box, or eatables. Diabetic students can carry fruits like banana, apple, orange and a transparent water bottle into venue. However, they are not allowed to bring packaged foods like chocolates, candy and sandwich etc.

The JEE Main scores are used for admissions into National Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Information Technology and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes. They are also taken as eligibility criteria to appear for JEE Advanced, a test conducted for admissions into Indian Institutes of Technology.
