National competitive exams like IIT-JEE and CAT are stressful enough on their own. But after students prepare for them for years and are nervous enough already, they also have to deal with ensuring they get to the venue on time.
In the near future, students answering these kinds of exams may at least have one less bit of stress to deal with. Since these are computer-based exams anyway, students may be allowed to simply log in and take the exam from anywhere
“In fact why just home?” asked Venguswamy Ramaswamy, Global Head of TCS iON, in a sit-down with GadgetsNow. “In future you can simply be at some beach or hills and take computer-based exams like IIT-JEE, CAT, and government service exams.
TCS iON is responsible for conducting around 80 percent of these PC-based national competitive exams in India, including service exams, and remote exams are a notion they’ve been suggesting. How exactly that can be logistically carried out is another question.
For instance, a student’s identity could possibly be verified via fingerprint using a companion smartphone app. There are two major problems though, like the one that comes up if the student doesn’t have a fingerprint sensor on any smartphone in their home. The other is how much this violates the privacy of someone’s personal data.
And if you instead decide to go with face scanning, that’s even worse. For one thing, your facial scan might be worse than giving away your thumbprint. Then there’s also the fact that face scans on regular cameras are nowhere near as precise as devices with IR blasters like the iPhone X upwards. This means they could easily fooled by a photo, a vulnerability students can use to cheat.
Hopefully though, TCS iON and the related authorities do give this some serious thought and find a way to implement being able to take national exams remotely. At least then test-takers would only have to worry about the stability of their home internet, and not whether they’re going to be late to the exam hall.
