JEE Main merit list to be based on percentile scores from next year

Yet another big news for JEE Main aspirants. News has poured in that the merit list for admission to engineering colleges, including Indian Institutes of Technology, through the Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE-Main) will be based on percentile scores and not the raw marks aspirants scored in the test, with the introduction of a two-cycle computer-based examination system from 2019. The NTA has introduced the normalisation of marks for the admission in engineering colleges. JEE Main is the entrance examination which acts as an eligibility test for those who wants to sit for JEE (Advanced) in order to take admission to IITs. As the format for architectural and engineering courses has changed with tests to be held in January and April, the National Testing Agency (NTA) reported another strategy for touching base at the NTA score, which will be the final merit list for admissions in IITs.

A senior official of the HRD ministry stated that the “normalisation procedure based on percentile score” to arrive at the NTA score has been based on the format in practice for the undergraduate-MBBS test conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. The official added, “A core group of experts from IITs (Roorkee, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati), IIM-Lucknow, NITs, UGC, IASRI (Pusa) and AIIMS, Delhi, among others have been asked to finalise the process for calculating the NTA score.”

From next year onward, a JEE-Main aspirant will have the choice of attempting the test two times, during the January and the April cycles. Each test cycle will have 14 days with multiple sessions each day. An NTA official explained the format saying, “Candidates will get different sets of questions per session and though efforts will be made to maintain equivalence among various question papers, the difficulty level of question papers in different sessions may not exactly be same.” Therefore, the prospects of cheating and manipulation are comparatively lesser now.

About NTA

The National Testing Agency also known as NTA has been established as an autonomous and self-sustained testing body to conduct entrance examinations for admission/fellowship in higher educational institutions. This year the NTA will be conducting engineering, medical as well as management courses. JEE Main 2019, NEET 2019, CMAT 2019 and UGC NET examination are some of the competitive examinations that NTA will focus on.
