EXPERT ADVICE ON CAREER CHOICES
█ I am in my last year of engineering. Could you please give me details about the PGDBA business analytics course at IIT Kharagpur, its entrance and scope? Also, is it equivalent to an MBA degree?
█ This programme is aimed at creating business analytics professionals employable by leading Indian and foreign fi rms and designed for those with an analytical mindset, who possess an inclination towards mathematics. This is a two-year full-time postgraduate diploma in business analytics (PGDBA), jointly off ered by IIM Calcutta, IIT Kharagpur and ISI Kolkata. You will have to apply online at http://www.iitkgp.ac.in/pgdba in December and then a written test will be held in February to shortlist candidates for personal interviews. The interview will be held in March and the fi nal off er made on the basis of performance in the written test, interview, work experience, and academic background. Students will have access to campus placement facilities of all three institutes. As for scope, there will be a shortage of about 200,000 data scientists in India over the next few years, according to sources in the Analytics Special Interest Group set up by NASSCOM.
█ I failed to clear my geography paper in the Class XII boards this year. I reappeared and the result is expected around August 15. I have scored 84 in the CET and am confi dent that I will clear the geography paper. Will I get admission in any engineering college after August 15?
The government of Maharashtra has conducted re-examinations for Class XII in July with the intention that students should be able to save a year. There are good chances that the DTE may conduct a special round of engineering admissions for students passing the boards in August. Else, you can try for admission in colleges based on vacancy of seats. I recommend that you try a sandwich engineering course where you spend two semesters in a four-year course in the industry. This will enhance your placement chances. One college I would recommend is NutanEnginering College (www.ncerpune.com) in Talegaon.
█ I got 89 per cent in Class X and am studying science (physics, chemistry and maths). I want to do research rather than engineering. Is it necessary that I prepare for the JEE?
The best option for you is IISER, which has three methods of admission, one of which is that 25 per cent seats are fi lled through JEE (advanced). Another excellent institute is IISC in Bangalore where 33 per cent admissions are through JEE. If you are interested in research in avionics or related fi elds, there is only one institute in India called IIST where admission is based only on the JEE (advanced) score. There is another option called NISER for which admission is based on a separate entrance examination called NEST. The study content is the same as JEE (advanced). So, even though not a must, JEE preparations and tuitions will be useful.
