Even as the results of Special Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE), 2018 were declared on Wednesday, the association of private engineering colleges urged the State Government to conduct another round of test to fill up the large-scale vacancies of seats. A total of 13,845 candidates had appeared the Special OJEE on July 22. Baring two candidates, all others were allotted ranks for admission into various courses in private engineering colleges.
As many as 6,098 candidates have been allotted ranks for admission into BTech and the rest for joining MBA, MCA, BPharm, MPharm and lateral entry to BTech and other courses. Downloading of rank cards, online registration and filing of choices will be done beteen July 27 and July 29. The first round allotment of seats will be done on July 30 and document verification will follow on August 1 and 2. The final allotment of seats will be done on August 3.
The results, however, has left the private engineering colleges in a fix as over 70 per cent of BTech seats will remain vacant. After the JEE (Main), only around 7000 engineering aspirants turned up for admission into engineering colleges leaving a whopping 31,200 of the total 38,200 seats vacant.Keeping in view the massive vacancies, the State Government conducted Special OJEE to allow more number of students to take admission in engineering colleges. However, with only 6,098 students getting ranks for BTech admission after the Special OJEE, the private engineering colleges are in a state of despair as over 24,000 seats will still remain vacant.
Expressing concern over the vacancies, the Odisha Private Engineering College Association (OPECA) urged the State Government to conduct the Special OJEE again. OPECA secretary Binod Dash said, “Nearly 3,300 students, who had registered for the Special OJEE, failed to turn up for the test due to heavy rains. Most of the students were BTech aspirants. We have requested the Government to give those students another chance and conduct the Special OJEE again on a Sunday at a centre in Bhubaneswar.”
