While the state government has revamped the Class XI syllabus to help students crack the national eligibility cum entrance examination (NEET), Biology teachers say they find the syllabus extremely difficult. The teachers requested the school education department to appoint subject experts to teach Botany and Zoology.
Most of the government higher secondary schools in Tamil Nadu have only one Biology teacher, who teaches both Botany and Zoology, said a government school teacher — who had been ensuring 100% pass for the last 10 years. “It has been over a decade since the government has stopped appointing separate teachers for Botany and Zoology. The post-graduate teachers, whose basic qualification is MSc and BEd, would have mastered either Botany or Zoology. Those who have mastered Botany, would have studied Zoology only for two years of their undergraduate programme as an ancillary subject. Such a teacher would not be familiar with the concepts of Zoology taught in Class XI and XII,” she told TOI.
Another teacher, who had mastered Botany, said teachers like her find it extremely difficult to understand the concepts of Zoology. “While we struggle to understand the concepts, how will we teach the students? Yes, we can manage to teach the outlines of the concept, but could not explain well,” he said. “As a result, whenever students try to clear doubts, teachers are forced to shut them up in order prevent embarrassment.”
Offering a solution, the teachers expressed readiness to teach the subject they have mastered in neighbouring schools as well. “The department should send subject experts from one school to nearby schools to conduct classes,” a teacher suggested. “Only then the number of government school students clearing NEET would increase.”
Meanwhile, department sources said they have organised teacher training programmes across the state for all the teachers to handle the subjects more effectively.
