JEE-Advanced may top IIT Council agenda for August 21 meet

The difficulty level of JEE-Advanced, the entrance examination for the IITs, is likely to be on top of the agenda of IIT Council, the governing body of all 23 IITs, whose meeting has been fixed for August 21.

The government is of the view that the difficulty level of the test needs to be lowered so that more students qualify and have a chance to study at the engineering institutes.

This year, only about 18,200 students qualified for about 12,000 seats on offer, meaning that the pool was too small to fill up the seats.

The Union Human Resources Development ministry intervened and got the cut-off percentage (35 per cent in aggregate for general category) lowered to 30 per cent, which led to 13,000 more students entering the eligibility pool.

A senior figure in the JEE-Advanced organising committee said special question designers could be hired to prepare a scientific method of holding JEE-Advanced.
