The cut-off for the “moderately difficult” Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Advanced is likely to take a slight dip this year.
According to students, there was a higher number of negative-mark questions. This was the first time the examination was conducted online; students were not allowed to take the question paper home.

“Integer-type questions were replaced by questions that had to be answered up to two decimal places this year. Also, multiple choice questions had a strange marking system. So, the 2018 JEE Advanced paper will not be as scorable as last year’s.
Students said the paper was moderately difficulty. Physics was the toughest, mathematics was the easiest, while chemistry was tricky, students said. This year, over 1,200 students from Pune appeared for the exam.
“There may be a 5% dip (in cut-offs) this year as compared to last year,”. “For example, 73% of the marks corresponded to the top 1,000 all-India ranks in 2017. This may come down to 67-68% this year. This also means fewer ranks are likely to be declared in 2018 compared to 2017 (50,000 ranks),” he added.
