EXPERT ADVICE ON CAREER CHOICES
█ I have completed Class XII this year and also appeared for the NEET and CET exams. I am interested in making doing a biology degree and making a career in a similar fi eld. Please advise me as to which course I should opt for and its admission procedure.
As you have appeared for NEET, medical options such as MBBS, BDS, homeopathy, ayurvedic as well as paramedical options like physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy are open to you. Admission for all these is through a medical admission process by the DMER. If you want to work with animals, veterinary science is also an option, for which admission is through MAFSU. If you want to do engineering based on your CET score and still want to keep in touch with biology, you can choose courses such as biomedical engineering or biotechnology engineering. For these, admission is through DTE. Also, as you have appeared for CET, agriculture options such as food technology are also open. These have a separate admission process through Krishi Parishad. You can think of options such as BSc in fi elds like biotechnology, botany, zoology, microbiology, geology or environmental science. For these, the admission process is at the individual college level. Again, if you want to go for research, you may try option such as a 5-year MS course in botany or zoology at IISER by appearing for the IISER entrance examination after your Class XII board results.
█ I have passed my Class IX standard exam and would like to pursue science in institutes such as IISER and IISC. What exams are necessary? Is JEE required and what is the admission process?
Admission to IISER after Class XI is through three modes – 25 per cent seats through the JEE advanced score, 25 percent through the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) examination score and 50 per cent through a separate examination conducted by IISER after Class XII board results are declared. Admission to IISC after class XII is also through three modes — one-third seats through each JEE (advanced), KVPY and NEET. This clearly means that if you attempt JEE, your chances of getting admission to IISER and IISC will defi nitely increase. Secondly, you should also prepare and attempt the KVPY exam during Class XII which will further improve your chances of admission.
█ My son has appeared for the Class X CBSE exam this year. He wishes to pursue a career in commerce. Are there any institutes in Pune affi liated to commerce colleges which tutor students to appear for classes XI and XII through which students can appear for the exams externally?
The Maharashtra HSC board does allow students to appear for the Class XII boards externally. One can study on their own and take the exam with the assistance of coaching classes for commerce subjects, especially accounting and economics
