Confusion over JEE (Advanced) rule on learning disabilities

MUMBAI: Some IIT aspirantswith learning disabilities (LD) are confused about the guidelines in the information brochure for JEE (Advanced) published by the organizing institute. The registration process for the exam commenced on Wednesday.

After receiving complaints from students, Harish Shetty, a senior psychiatrist, has written to the organizing chairman of JEE (Advanced) from IIT-Kanpur and also brought the ‘anomalies’ in the brochure to the notice of the Union health minister. He said the brochure mentions that “students with dyslexia need to submit form dyslexia 1 and dyslexia 2 instead of form PwD (People with Disabilities). The certificate must mention ‘severe’ to enable the candidate to get benefit of the PwD category”. The IITs reserve 5% seats for candidates from the PwD category.

Shetty said the brochure should have mentioned learning disability (LD) and not just dyslexia, as LD includes dyslexia and other associated disabilities. “LD, unlike physical disability, cannot be categorized in quantitative terms. The question of mild, moderate and severe does not arise in such cases,” said Shetty. “Also, the IITs have sought certificate from any dyslexia association, but all over the country, government hospitals with departments of psychiatry issue the certificate. This confusion has created a lot of stress for students with learning disabilities. These anomalies should be rectified immediately.”

An official from IIT-Kanpur said the brochure was available on the website since two months. “It was only after the JEE (Main) results were out, students are pointing at these anomalies. We have not received any complaints so far. The brochures are prepared with help from experts and it is similar to the one used in 2017 exams too. Nobody has contested it so far,” said the official.
